recruitment FAQ
Recruitment is a two-week opportunity filled with events for girls interested in joining SYZ to learn more about us and our organization. It is a wonderful way to meet and engage with the active sisters through organized events to gauge whether or not you connect and if we would be a good fit for you. It's a chance to ask any questions you have about SYZ, the intake process, and sorority life as a whole. All rush events are free and non-binding, so come out and have some fun!
Why us?
We are the newest Asian-interest sorority on campus. What this means is that we're relatively small, and thus we provide a closer, more tight-knit community. We are a growing organization, and can offer many opportunities for leadership and personal growth. Beyond the small size of our growing charter, we are the third largest Asian-interest sorority in the country and have a large presence nationwide, with 32 sisterships from coast to coast. Sigma Psi Zeta has a strong national network as well as a very connected alumni community that provide social, cultural, professional, and networking opportunities beyond the Bay Area and beyond California. Joining SYZ has so much to offer and enriches your life in so many ways - come out to rush to begin the adventure of a lifetime!
What kind of girl are you looking for? What is a typical sister like?
There is no "typical" sister, and what makes us different from other sororities on campus is the diversity and uniqueness of our members. We have dancers, musicians, readers, fashionistas, scientists, foodies, introverts, extroverts, and more! Each sister has her own talents, interests, and special skill sets, and we value all who are committed to contributing to SYZ in her own way. Don't worry about trying to present yourself as a certain type of girl we're looking for; just be yourself and come out to see if you're comfortable with us!
Can non-Asians/Asian Americans join?
Definitely! Sigma Psi Zeta is a multicultural, Asian-interest sorority, not Asian exclusive. Our sisterships across the nation are filled with girls from a diverse range of racial and ethnic backgrounds.
Do you haze?
Sigma Psi Zeta has a strict no-tolerance policy for hazing. Our organization's national philanthropy is to combat violence against women, and to haze would be to violate everything we stand for. Not only is it our national philanthropy, but also the majority of our sisters are passionate, strong-willed feminists who are not afraid to speak up about hazing and all forms of disrespect and degradation to women. Furthermore, we believe that hazing does nothing to bring closer together the members of an intake class, which is one of our primary goals of intake. If at any time a sister feels like she is being hazed or disrespected, we have resources available for confidential reports and work hard to address the issue to ensure it will never happen again to the best of our ability.
Does recruiting with another sorority affect one's chances of getting a bid?
No it does not. There are many other sororities on campus and we are certainly not the first Asian-interest sorority. We encourage all interested girls to explore their options, as checking out others and talking to more sisters will increase your chances of finding a good fit for you.
